Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow played through the pain on Monday as he helped his team scrape out a 19-16 win against the Los Angeles Rams. There was a lot of doubt surrounding the Pro Bowl quarterback’s status for that matchup after he aggravated his calf injury in Week 2. Burrow gutted it out, though, and apparently, New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers played a key role in the same.
Cincinnati Bengals Star Joe Burrow Reached Out to Aaron Rodgers
Burrow himself revealed in a recent interview that he personally reached out to Rodgers before he made a decision on whether or not he was going to play against the Rams. According to the Bengals star, he considered what Rodgers had to tell him after he sought advise regarding his injury:
“He’s dealt with calf issues his whole career and wanted to use him as a resource and get his thoughts, what he might have done,” said Burrow, via Ben Baby of ESPN. “He’s been through it, done that. And he was great about it.”
There was a real sense of urgency for Burrow and the Bengals as they entered Week 3 with a 0-2 record. Burrow admitted that suiting up on Monday came with its risks, but at the same time, these were outweighed by the prospect of Cincinnati going 0-3 to start the season.
Aaron Rodgers Heaps Praise on Joe Burrow
Rodgers himself has spoken out about his conversation with his younger counterpart. During his recent guesting on The Pat McAfee Show, the injured Jets quarterback had nothing but good things to say about Burrow’s decision to play through his own injury:
“For him to tough it out, I don’t think that people realize how much pain and limited mobility he was in,” Rodgers said. “But for him to gut it out last night and to make enough plays to win, like I texted him, that’s what great competitors do. They show up and play through the pain and don’t make it a big deal.”
Burrow did not look like himself against the Rams, logging 26-of-49 completed passes for 259 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. However, the fact that he was even available for Cincinnati speaks volumes of this young man’s elite competitive nature.
It’s great to hear these types of exchange of pleasantries between two all-time great quarterbacks. Hopefully, we get to see these two battle it out on the field before Rodgers calls time on his decorated career.
