The Chicago Bears, who just signed All-Pro Jaylon Johnson to a massive contract extension have added another star to their secondary in safety Kevin Byard. Who signed a 2-year, $15 million dollar deal according to NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport. Byard, who was drafted 64th overall in 2016 has received All-Pro status twice throughout his career.
Kevin Byard was Traded to Philadelphia Eagles in Middle of 2023 Season
Byard, who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans was traded in the middle of last season to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Terrell Edmunds and two 2024 draft picks. He finished his 2023 campaign in Philadelphia, but struggled to find his rhythm and was cut after the season to make extra salary cap space.
Byard combined for 75 total tackles and caught one interception in last season in Philadelphia, but had the worst completion rates in his career with a 74.6 percent average. He also held an opposing quarterback rating of 102.1, which is the second worst throughout his career.
Chicago Bears Defense Dominated in Last 6 Games of 2023 Season
While he was not able to benefit from the trade to Philadelphia, Byard has an opportunity to shine in a Bears scheme that dominated in the second half of last season. With the addition of Montez Sweat from Washington, Chicago was able to hold opposing offenses to an average of 15.5 points in their last 6 contests.
With the addition of a two time All-Pro in Byard, Chicago’s secondary should receive an extra boost after letting go of long-time safety Eddie Jackson. The Bears defense is starting to look like days of old, but their offense still has some questions to answer in the next few weeks.
