The Chicago Bears are in an enviable position among all NFL teams. They have the number one pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and they didn’t even have to finish with the worst record in the league in order to get it. Instead, they got from the Carolina Panthers, who finished 2-15 a year after traded their first round pick to Chicago along with DJ Moore for last year’s first overall pick.
Obviously, Chicago will hope to better with this first overall pick than Carolina did with theirs. In a recent mock re-draft of the 2023 NFL Draft, Bryce Young wasn’t even taken by any other team in the first round. The question for the Bears, though, is whether or not they take USC quarterback Caleb Williams and move on from Justin Fields, or do they trade down in the first round and take top wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.?
The Chicago Bears Named Best Fit for Marvin Harrison Jr. in the 2024 NFL Draft
While some may believe that Chicago should cut their losses with Fields, others believe that the Ohio State product has not been given adequate weapons to be successful. Drafting a wide receiver like Harrison Jr., who is himself a Ohio State product, could go a long way to helping Fields improve and succeed.
Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report actually thinks the Bears are the best fit for Harrison Jr. in the draft anyway:
“While Fields’ future in Chicago remains unclear, Harrison’s fit with the Bears is obvious. With new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in the building, having both DJ Moore and Harrison to use in a variety of alignments would give opposing secondaries nightmares.
“With the aid of Waldron’s experience in deploying the likes of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba during his time in Seattle, the duo of Moore and Harrison would, finally, present Fields a high level core of wideouts.
“With GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus back in 2024, trading back (even if it’s one spot) and grabbing Harrison to build around Fields may not be the most popular move, but would be one the Bears faithful shouldn’t scoff at if it becomes reality.”
One interesting scenario could be the Bears trading back to the third or fourth pick and taking Harrison and using their ninth overall pick on a potential future quarterback. Even if they choose to stick with Fields this season, the 2025 quarterback class is going to be better than many think.
Another option could be trading back, taking Harrison, and still trading Fields for additional picks. They could use the ninth overall pick on an immediate rookie starter like JJ McCarthy or maybe use some of their immense salary cap space to sign a veteran like Kirk Cousins.
