The moment the Chicago Bears got the first overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before Justin Fields was out of the team. With the Bears still struggling to make things work with Fields, it made sense for the squad to reset their clock and move forward with a new QB.
While there are still people who think that the Bears got too little in exchange for Fields, the team is putting up a defense that they took the trade the Pittsburgh Steelers offered because it would give their former QB a better shot at a respectable NFL career.
Adam Schefter reveals the Chicago Bears wanted to give Justin Fields the right situation
NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that while the Bears were looking for a way to ship Justin Fields out of the team, they didn’t want to send him anywhere and have him rot away as a backup.
Schefter reveals that the team chose the Steelers because they thought he has the best chance at getting the starting QB position compared to another NFL team that was rumored to be gunning for him.
“The Bears general manager, Ryan Poles, said that they were going to do right by Justin Fields and get him situated in his new home by the time the new league year started, which just happened to be this past week,” Schefter said.
“The fact of the matter is it’s a soft trade market, as the compensation for him shows. The Bears felt that they were doing right by Justin Fields to move him now, to get him to his new team despite the fact that the compensation turned out to be lower than some people thought it would be.”
Fields finished his final season with the Bears with his best performance yet. Through 13 games, he threw for 2562 passing yards, 16 TDs, and a 5-8 record. His 9 interceptions is also the lowest of his career,
If he manages to build on his 2023 performance and sap as much game knowledge from Russell Wilson as possible, it’s only a matter of time before the 25-year-old Ohio State product becomes the quality starter the Bears always believed him to be.
