Chicago Bears CEO and President Kevin Warren recently came out with some high praise for quarterback Justin Fields. It appeared to be a genuine show of support for the embattled QB, who is coming off a rather forgettable campaign with Chicago.
Warren’s comments have now become the subject of a bit of controversy. Some folks believe that these are contradictory amid rumors of the Bears now looking to move on from the 24-year-old quarterback.
Chicago Bears CEO Kevin Warren’s Justin Fields’ Praise Gets Ripped Apart
Speaking in a recent interview, Warren decided to sing Fields’ praises as the high-ranking team executive expressed just how much he admires the young quarterback:
“I’m a supporter of Justin because I got a chance to work with him when I was commissioner of the Big Ten conference,” Warren said, via Ryan Taylor of NBC Sports Chicago. “He is incredibly talented. He is smart. He works hard. And he wants to be a great NFL football player. And now he just needs to make sure he has the support around him. He’s working hard. I would love to see him this offseason and make sure he’s totally healthy going into the season next year.”
If you didn’t know any better, these comments make it seem like Fields has a bright future ahead as Chicago’s cornerstone quarterback.
This might not be the case, though. The Bears are the proud owners of the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft, which they could use to draft a new quarterback — perhaps someone like Caleb Williams of USC. If they opt to take this path, then this only means that Fields’ time in Chicago is likely coming to an end.
According to an anonymous source with “extensive experience navigating such dynamics within an NFL organization,” Warren would be better off staying in his lane:
“This where the business guys get themselves in trouble,” the source said, via Mike Florio of PFT. “[Warren] knows nothing about players.”
“… What if those guys started giving their opinions about the new stadium that made his job more difficult?”
That’s brutal.
At the end of the day, though, this could all be part of Chicago’s plans. If they are indeed planning to bring in a new quarterback then it would be in their best interest to pump up Fields’ potential trade value. After all, Warren would not be in the position he is in right now had it not been for his business savvy.
