The Chicago Bears can take a major leap this offseason. Armed with the no. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as well as a massive war chest to sign free agents, the Windy City franchise is in a good position to field a potential playoff contender in the upcoming season.
While quarterback is their biggest question at the moment, it’s something they can quickly resolve in the draft. The next concern for them is actually putting whoever their QB is next season in a good position to succeed.
In order to do that, the Bears could go hard in free agency. One player that could quickly elevate them is Mike Evans, who is undoubtedly one of the top wideouts available in the market.
Why Chicago Bears Must Sign Mike Evans
In the latest “free agency mock draft” by Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, a case was made for the Bears to pursue Evans.
While Chicago already has a reliable receiver in DJ Moore, Evans gives them a clear no. 1 option who has a nose for scoring.
Adding another weapon is also the best thing the Bears can do for whoever quarterback they have in 2024—be it Justin Fields, Caleb Williams or anyone else.
Here’s what Benjamin wrote about the Bears potentially signing Evans:
“QB will be addressed one way or another, likely at the top of the real draft. Regardless, Evans finally gives them a formidable 1-2 punch out wide, pairing Evans’ big-bodied dominance with DJ Moore’s electricity.”
Of course it will take a lot for the Bears to sign Evans, but they have the money to do so. In free agency, Chicago actually owns the third-highest cap space at $78.3 million, only behind the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans.
How Much Will Mike Evans Cost for the Chicago Bears?
As mentioned, if the Chicago Bears want to pursue Mike Evans, they will have to be ready to break the bank. Evans is expected to have a flurry of suitors in free agency, with the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots among those mentioned interested in him.
With that being said, in order for Evans to give them some attention, they will have to give a competitive offer.
Evans’ current market value is at $23.8 million per year, according to Spotrac. And he is expected to ask for a four-year deal worth $95 million.
Whether Chicago is going to be willing to spend that much remains to be seen, but there’s no denying they will have to really spend if they want to rebuild quickly.
