Chargers Showing Interest In Big-Time Free Agent TE

Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers are a team that desperately needs to figure out how to make the next step. There is no denying the talent that they have on their roster, but it hasn’t been good enough to get them into contention in the AFC. Part of that has to do with the fact that they play in the tough AFC West, but something has to give at some point soon.

Last season, the Chargers ended up compiling a 10-7 record. That got them into the playoffs, where they were defeated by the Jacksonville Jaguars in brutal fashion by a final score of 31-30.

With that in mind, they were on the list of most intriguing teams to keep an eye on in free agency. They haven’t made a ton of noise, but that could change at some point in the very near future.

The Chargers Are Interested In A Big-Time Free Agent Tight End

According to a report from Jordan Schultz of The Score, the Chargers are among the teams showing interest in Dallas Cowboys’ free agent tight end Dalton Schultz.

Sources say #Chargers are among the teams to have shown interest in #Cowboys FA TE Dalton Schultz. So far, price has been too high, but the Bolts also hired former Dallas OC Kellen Moore, so there is a connection there. @theScore

Schultz would be a very intriguing pickup for the Chargers. He would give Herbert another weapon and a big weapon at that. His ability to utilize his size and speed together to create mismatches would be welcomed in Los Angeles.

During the 2022 season with the Cowboys, Schultz ended up catching 57 passes for 577 yards and five touchdowns. Back in 2021, he racked up 78 receptions for 808 yards and eight touchdowns.

After back-to-back big years from the former Stanford standout, the Chargers would be wise to pick him up. He would add another element to the L.A. offense that the team could definitely use.

At 26 years of age, Schultz is very much in the prime of his career. He would be a safe bet to sign to a four-year contract and could build alongside the rest of the young talent for the future. The move would also give the Chargers a much better chance to compete in the AFC now.

It will be interesting to see who ends up landing Schultz. Mike Gesicki is another free agent tight end who has generated a lot of buzz and could make sense for the Chargers. Either way, they need to prioritize bringing in more help for Herbert at the tight end position.

Expect to hear a lot more rumors about the Chargers in the coming days. Los Angeles is looking to dip their toes into the free agency market and Dalton Schultz may be their first domino.
