The Carolina Panthers had a 2023-24 season to forget. They finished with a 2-15 record. To add insult to injury, they do not even get to keep their top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
This has resulted in the organization needing to make some changes. However, the Panthers have an uphill battle. Because of this, Carolina has tipped their hand as to which direction they are heading.
Carolina Panthers Block Coach Interview Request
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Jacksonville Jaguars requested to interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. However, Carolina surprisingly blocked this request. The reported reason is that the Panthers plan on interviewing Evero for their head coach position.
Possible Reasons for Move
There are a few possible reasons why the Carolina Panthers may have done this. The first reason is that they may truly want Evero to be their next head coach. Despite having the worst offense in the NFL, Evero led the Panthers to be ranked as the fourth-best total defense in the league.
Next, they may want to retain Evero as their defensive coordinator. The statistics mentioned above speak for itself in this department.
Finally, Carolina may not feel like they have a better option for their next head coach. Technically, Evero is still under contract with the Panthers. Plus, with Carolina having more limited draft picks to work with, the Panthers’ head coach position may not be the most desirable job for outside candidates.
