The Carolina Panthers took their quarterback of the future in Bryce Young number one overall in the NFL Draft. There are very little questions about his game but he has one fatal flaw that everyone loves to point out, his size. Standing at 5′ 10″ he is one of the shortest quarterbacks in the league and this has been a huge topic of conversation amongst analysts. Young addressed those size concerns in a recent interview.
Carolina Panthers Bryce Young On Size Concerns
His lack of height is something that he has been dealing with his whole life and there is not much he can do about it. “For me, I focus on what I can control,” Young said during a conversation with Yahoo Sports senior NFL reporter Jori Epstein. “I know who I am and I know what I can do and I’ve been the same size relative to the people around me for pretty much my whole life.” The Panthers don’t seem concerned about it as head coach Frank Reich talked about how he looks great in minicamp.
Is This Real Or Overblown?
For me, the height question is somewhere in the middle. Being under six foot is a real problem in the NFL. Players in the NFL are bigger and faster. The risk of injury is higher for smaller players. However, I do think this has gotten to a ridiculous level of worry. Young’s tape shows that he has a firm grasp of the quarterback position and if he plays intelligently, he can mitigate the risk that being small brings. Dree Brees and Russell Wilson are small and their NFL careers have been great.
The Panthers are hoping that they finally have their quarterback of the future in Bryce Young. They gave up a lot to get him so they clearly have the confidence in him.
