Bryce Young struggled in his first year with the Carolina Panthers, and by the looks of it, one NFL analyst has absolutely lost belief in his ability to thrive in the league.
Radio and TV personality Craig Carton was highly critical of Young in a recent episode of his show, noting that Young doesn’t have what it takes to be a quarterback in the NFL.
Carolina Panthers’ Bryce Young Gets Massive Criticisms
In making a case for his argument, Carton emphasized that Young is a “good kid” and “great athlete.” The veteran host doesn’t have any issue with the youngster’s approach to the game either. Clearly, there’s a reason why he’s the no. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The problem that Carton sees, however, is Young doesn’t seem to be a good fit at the quarterback position. With his height already a limitation, the commentator predicted that Young would only continue to struggle in the NFL.
“Bryce Young is not an NFL quarterback. And I’m not saying he’s not a good kid or a great athlete, clearly he is. But Bryce Young, at 5-foot-2, can never be a successful quarterback in the NFL,” Carton shared, via Panthers Wire.
“As great as he was in college, as smart as he is, as athletic as he is, he’s not an NFL quarterback. He’s like a third-down specialty back or maybe, maybe a slot receiver on third-and-2. He’s not an NFL quarterback. He will never have great success in the NFL, and he was one of the worst picks a team has ever made in the history of the NFL while picking No. 1.”

That’s certainly some harsh assessment from Carton. While the numbers do back up his remarks, it might still be too early to judge the youngster based off on one season. Baker Mayfield is a prime example of that, as he didn’t have much success either until he proved with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that he can lead a team in the postseason.
Is There Still Hope for Carolina Panthers’ Bryce Young?
Bryce Young finished the 2023 season with 2877 yards and 11 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He averaged just 179.8 yards per game and was even sacked 62 times, the second-most in the NFL.
Sure enough, however, it’s not just Young’s fault that he had a difficult year with the Panthers. He did not only lack protection, but he also didn’t have a lot of weapons to work on. Not to mention that Carolina’s toxic “Hunger Games” culture certainly didn’t help in his development.
With that said, it is just wrong to call Young someone that is not fit to be a quarterback. Unlike fellow 2023 rookie CJ Stroud who ended up in a good situation, Young didn’t have that luxury.
Sure enough, his second year will be crucial in proving the haters and doubters like Craig Carton wrong. But at the end of the day, he can’t do it alone and he needs the Panthers to put in the work as well.
