The Dallas Cowboys have not lived up to their fans’ expectations with their current core group of players. The roster is stacked at the skill positions, even the offensive and defensive lines are no slouch. Still they have not been able to produce a championship effort, and have hardly come close. The team remains competitive in arguably the worst division in the NFL but is that enough or is it time to use this extra cap space?
Breakdown of The Offense:
Dak Prescott is an elite quarterback, or is he? While he maintains the numbers to support this theory he doesn’t have the results. He currently has one win, by just two points, to go with three losses in his playoff career. Even with the additional support from Ceedee Lamb who has proven to be a dynamic receiver and the support from a strong running game. Then there is Ezekiel Elliott and his all star status. He has reached 1000 yards rushing in four out of six seasons , only missing this mark by about twenty yards the other two seasons. Again the numbers seem to speak for themselves. However if you watch the games Tony Pollard stands out as the more electric of the two backs. The franchise is riding these two, maybe three counting Ceedee Lamb, as key players which the offense is based around. But what has that accomplished?
Breakdown Of The Defense:
The Dallas Cowboys defense went through ups and downs last year, finishing seventh ranked overall. If you are a fan it was easy to get excited because they had some great games defensively. A hand full of talented players such as Trevon Diggs and Micah Parsons made their presence known. Some games however were hard to watch, unless you like watching the referees throwing flags. This flaw in their defense was exploited, two times particularly. The game against the Oakland Raiders where the Cowboys totaled 166 penalty yards on November 25th set a franchise record. The final blow came against the San Francisco 49ers in their Wild Card game. The Cowboys had 14 penalties in total. Inexcusable performances making it nearly impossible to win a football game.
Time for Change?
As the highest paid team in the NFL is being competitive in the worst division enough justification to maintain course? If the franchise did choose to use the extra cap space to go a different direction how long would the turn around take? Could less than top tier athletes remain competitive in such a lack luster division? Finally, would the end justify the means, returning the Dallas Cowboys to their glory days of the 1990’s?
