After David Hicks shocked the college football world and committed to Texas A&M on September 28th, many people, especially around the OU program, have wondered if he’d truly end up as an Aggie. As we saw previously with Colton Vasek’s decommitment, it’s Flipmas season, and no program is safe. A&M has had no shortage of struggles this season, needing to win out just to make a bowl game. Will that be enough to dissuade Hicks? On it’s own, probably not. However, Oklahoma is pulling out all the stops to make sure that David Hicks ends up in Norman
Where Does Oklahoma Currently Sit With David Hicks?
Even though he is currently committed to A&M, Hicks has remained in constant contact with Todd Bates and the rest of the Oklahoma staff. Could this just be out of courtesy due to Hicks’s and Bates’s relationship? That’s not completely out of the question, however, it seems unlikely. Hicks still has an official visit scheduled with the Sooners on November 19th, Bedlam week. The fact that he has not cancelled this visit is a good sign, and as of now, Hicks has stated that he fully intends to show up, as well as a multitude of other big time prospects. Oklahoma has an opportunity to really shift the tides, and pick up some last minute momentum to finish the class strong.
The Sooners have pulled out all the stops to land the five-star, and the most recent move is offering David’s high school teammate, Daymion Sanford. Sanford is listed at linebacker, and is also committed to the Aggies.
Although they aren’t a complete package deal, it definitely won’t hurt to try and pick him up. He is listed as the 364th overall player in the 247 composite rankings. Hicks and Sanford are close friends, and one can’t help but wonder if that played a role in Hicks’s commitment to A&M. Oklahoma is pressing hard for both prospects, and some feel that it’s only a matter of time before they flip.
We’ve talked about the coaching staff recruiting David Hicks, but what about the players? What kind of role will they play in getting Hicks to Norman? Sooner DL commit Derrick Leblanc has stated that he is willing to do “whatever it takes” to make sure that Hicks is in an Oklahoma uniform come next fall. Other OU commits are trying to do their part as well, however, Leblanc seems to have the best relationship with Hicks and seems to be pushing him the hardest.
Will This Be Enough to Flip Hicks?
In the end, it’s impossible to tell whether or not Hicks will end up in Norman. However, with OU being able to get him on campus for an official visit, they aren’t out of the running just yet. The Bedlam visit will be Hicks’s final official visit before signing day, so we’ll see if the Sooners can leave a good impression. A&M’s continued struggles, as well as the drama surrounding Jimbo Fisher and the rest of the locker room all work in Oklahoma’s favor. Only time will tell, but there’s a good chance that David Hicks will ultimately end up as a Sooner.
