USC Trojans star Caleb Williams has been the consensus no. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for some time now, but according to Dan Orlovsky of ESPN, another QB is better than him and deserves to be the top overall pick.
The former NFL quarterback recently shared his belief that he would pick LSU Tigers standout Jayden Daniels over Williams.
Dan Orlovsky Makes Case for Jayden Daniels as No. 1 Pick Over Caleb Williams

During the latest episode of The Rich Eisen Show on Monday, Orlovsky discussed his thoughts on the current Top 3 quarterbacks in the class of 2024, featuring Williams, Daniels and Drake Maye.
Orlovsky, who played in the NFL from 2005 to 2017 as part of six different teams, then highlighted that Daniels really stood out to him, particularly his accuracy and ball placement.
“After you know watching, I don’t like to say anything about these guys unless I’ve watched all of their snaps in totality. The only three that I’ve done in totality are Caleb, Jayden, and Drake May. After watching all of them I would take Jayden number one,” Orlovsky told Eisen.
“I think the things that make it stand out for me are number one, I think his ball placement versus Man coverage is the best in the draft. We see that in the NFL on a consistent basis, [and we’re] starting to see more and more of it. This is what I say Rich, every quarterback in the NFL is accurate–it’s the NFL there’s 60 people on the planet that have those jobs, [so] everybody’s accurate. Accuracy is throwing it to your guy, ball placement [is] throwing it away from the defense. He’s [Daniels] got the best on tape.”

This is definitely not a knock on Williams and his ability. Nonetheless, it’s definitely an intriguing take considering that many believe that the gap between Williams and the other two quarterbacks in the Top 3 is huge.
Sure enough, if Orlovsky is to be believed, that’s not the case at all.
Dan Orlovsky Not the Only One Impressed by Jayden Daniels

For what it’s worth, it’s not only Dan Orlovsky who thinks Jayden Daniels is better than Caleb Williams and deserves to go no. 1.
Recently it has been reported that Bill Belichick, prior to his firing, was targeting Daniels for the New England Patriots. In fact, the legendary tactician saw the LSU product and 2023 Heisman winner as the best quarterback in the class.
“I can tell you, based on conversations that I’ve had with people around the organization, Bill Belichick loved Jayden Daniels. He was the guy on top of their draft board. He was going to do everything in his power to try and get that guy,” Bridget Condon of NFL Network shared.
On the other hand, while Williams himself still has plenty of fans, he also has his fair share of critics. Former NFL running back Merril Hoge is one of the most critical on the USC star, saying that he’s not special.
Williams will likely still be the no. 1 pick, but it will be interesting to see how he and Daniels fare once they step foot onto the NFL gridiron.
