The Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs had another classic playoff meeting. However, the circumstances of this one were different, as this was Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ first ever NFL road playoff game. Unfortunately, for the Bills, it ended in heartbreak once again.
Kansas City Chiefs Defeat Buffalo Bills 27-24
This game saw five different lead changes. Star players like Chiefs TE Travis Kelce stepped up, which resulted in notable supporters going shirtless in the stands. However, there was one key moment.
The Bills trailed the Chiefs 27-24 with under two minutes to go. On 4th and 9 at the Chiefs’ 24-yard line. This set up a 42-yard field goal attempt by Bills kicker Tyler Bass.
An important note here is that Bass was 9/9 in his career when it came to playoff field goal attempts when the Bills were tied or trailing. Unfortunately, Bass’ luck ran out here, as the wind hooked this kick right. The Chiefs then ran a handful of plays to ice the game, eliminating the Bills once again.
Kansas City Chiefs Moving Forward
Patrick Mahomes has now led the Kansas City Chiefs to six straight AFC Championship appearances after winning his first NFL road playoff game. On top of this, an earlier report indicated that Kelce may retire at the end of this season. Now, he still has a chance to win one last Super Bowl if this is the end.
Buffalo Bills Disappointment
This is yet another heartbreaker for the Buffalo Bills. They got several key breaks, including a failed fumble recovery by the Chiefs shortly before the field goal attempt. Plus, Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman fumbled the football at the Bills’ 1-yard line, and that resulted in a touchback.
Now, Bills fans have to relive previous heartbreaking losses. Buffalo is now 0-3 against the Chiefs in the playoffs with Patrick Mahomes leading the way. Worst of all, they could not take advantage of having won six straight games going into this and having a home game for this matchup for once.
