The Buffalo Bills have had to battle the Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason three times in the last four years, including their Divisional Round matchup against Patrick Mahomes and Co. this past season.
On all three occasions, it was the Chiefs who came out on top. At this point, there’s no denying that Kansas City holds the upper hand in their rivalry against the Bills.
Buffalo Bills Star Josh Allen Speaks Out on Chiefs Rivalry
If you ask Bills quarterback Josh Allen, however, the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback remains adamant that there’s really nothing special about facing off against Mahomes and the Chiefs:
“It’s another game for me,” Allen said, via Patrick Andres of SI. “Whether it’s him over there, whether it was (Baltimore Ravens quarterback) Lamar (Jackson), whether it was (Cincinnati Bengals quarterback) Joe (Burrow), you name it. … It doesn’t matter who’s over there playing. We get so caught up in the quarterback vs. quarterback controversy. I’m not playing him. I’m playing that defense.”
Well, that’s true to a certain extent, I guess.
What is clear is that Allen doesn’t put much stock into these types of narratives, especially when it comes to his individual rivalry with Mahomes. As he implied, it’s not as if he’s going one-on-one in a boxing ring against the reigning back-to-back Super Bowl MVP.
He’s not wrong.
Then again, you can’t help but think that perhaps this is the problem. You can’t fault Allen for a lack of competitive spirit, but perhaps he will need to take these QB battles a little bit more personally — especially when it comes to Mahomes.
After all, we probably wouldn’t be criticizing him like this if he hadn’t lost to Pat in the playoffs three times in the last four years.
