The Buffalo Bills had an eventful Wednesday afternoon, releasing five players: safety Jordan Poyer, center Mitch Morse, defensive back Siran Neal, wide receiver Deonte Harty, and running back Nyheim Hines.
Buffalo is going on a releasing spree to get under the salary cap for the new league year, but they also look to be making an addition to the roster before free agency hits next week.
Mitchell Trubisky Coming Back To Buffalo
Tim Graham from The Athletic stated, “Bills and former backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky are in talks to reunite.”

The report was also confirmed by CBS Sports Jonathan Jones, who stated,” Talks between Trubiksy and the Bills are progressing, a source confirms.”

Bills fans should remember Trubisky very well since he was Josh Allen’s backup in 2021 before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 and spent the last two years in the Steel City.
Trubiksy was the Chicago Bears’ second overall pick in 2017. He spent four seasons with the team, making one playoff appearance.
Trubisky will always be remembered as the first quarterback to be selected in 2017 in a class that featured quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.
The 29-year-old quarterback was signed to be the Steelers starter in March of 2022, but the team took quarterback Kenny Pickett in the first draft round, and Trubisky only saw five games started that season.
Trubisky started the 2023 season as Pickett’s backup, but he would see playing time when Pickett went down with an injury in Week 13.
Trubisky would get the start in Week 14 and 15, losing both games, one to the New England Patriots and one to the Indianapolis Colts, and then was benched for third-stringer Mason Rudolph.
The Steelers released Trubisky in early February, and it now looks like he could be returning to Buffalo for a second stint.
Trubisky And Buffalo Is A Great Match
Since Trubiksy was released and was not an upcoming free agent, he can sign anywhere he wants before the new league year starts on March 13th. Buffalo can sign him right away before other free agent quarterbacks become available next week.
Buffalo will need a second-string quarterback since last year’s backup, Kyle Allen, is set to hit free agency next week. Trubisky’s return to Buffalo could be suitable for both parties. Trubisky won’t have to start unless something happens to Allen, and if he does get thrown into the mix, he is around a good amount of good-skill position players and offensive linemen, which could help him.
Buffalo also gets a backup they know since he was with the team for a season and has some similarities to Allen. Trubisky is a few inches shorter than Allen, sitting at 6’2, but he likes to run the ball and pick up yards with his legs, which is what Allen loves to do.
If something happened to Allen and Trubiksy had to start for a while, Buffalo wouldn’t have to change the playbook around too much.
The backup quarterback position is critical. Last season, the Cleveland Browns made the playoffs with Joe Flacco after starting quarterback Deshaun Watson went out in the middle of the season. Buffalo’s signing a veteran at that position could be beneficial down the road.
