Only a few days after the end of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns elected to reshuffle their offense by reaching an agreement with veteran wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Members of the Browns confirmed to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo on Monday afternoon that the team and Johnson finalized the contract shortly afterward.

Diontae Johnson’s Chaotic Bounce Around
Johnson, who has now joined his third AFC North team in two years, spent a chaotic 2024 season bouncing between the Panthers, Ravens, and Texans. He posted 375 yards and three touchdowns, with most of his production coming in Carolina. His season took a turn when he refused to take the field against the Eagles while with the Ravens, leading to a suspension and eventual release. After a brief stop in Houston, Johnson became a free agent this offseason.
He has gotten a new start in Cleveland (a team that is looking for stability and playmakers offensively). The Browns’ quarterback situation is unsettled. The most experienced choice is Joe Flacco, who just turned 40, and Deshaun Watson is still recovering from an Achilles injury. The Browns added two new quarterbacks during the draft: Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, who happened to slip to the fifth round, and Nebraska’s Dillon Gabriel, who was selected No. 94 overall.

The Browns needed someone with a veteran presence at wide receiver since there’s uncertainty under center. Johnson will join a group being led by Jerry Jeudy, who was pretty impressive in 2024 and gained more than 1,200 receiving yards, and Cedric Tillman. Cleveland now has another experienced weapon to help any quarterback that comes off the bench this fall, after adding Diontae Johnson.
Diontae Johnson hasn’t had an easy year, but his talent and experience could give him an impact if he can find his way in Cleveland. The Browns also need additional firepower as they try to climb back into contention in the AFC North for a team that finished 3-14 last season.
