Regardless of what happens in Super Bowl LVIII, no one can deny the fact that Brock Purdy has had a great first full season under center for the San Francisco 49ers, and he has gained a lot of fans in the process.
One of them is Super Bowl XLIV MVP Drew Brees, who went on the record saying that Purdy reminds him of himself during his playing days when he chopped it up with Colin Cowherd on FOX Sports’ The Herd on Thursday.
“The thing that I love about him the most is the fact that he was a guy who went to Iowa State and was not highly recruited. Similar to Purdue, most of the time when we were stepping on the field during our college days, we were the underdog,” said Brees.
“We weren’t winning the beauty pageant. We were going to have to scratch and crawl and find ways to win those games, so we were in a ton of competitive situations. That molds you,” he added.
Is Drew Brees an accurate comp for Brock Purdy?
Drew Brees and Brock Purdy are not far off from each other as far as their physical attributes are concerned. Brees stood at 6’0″ and 209 pounds, while Purdy is listed at 6’1″ and 220 pounds. Purdy was the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, while Brees was the No. 32 overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft.
In his 16 regular-season starts for the San Francisco 49ers this season, Brock Purdy recorded 4,280 passing yards, 31 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a league-best 113.0 passer rating while completing 69.4 percent of his passes to make it to his first-ever Pro Bowl.
Meanwhile, Drew Brees played 20 years in the NFL and led the league in passing yards seven times, completion percentage six times, and passing touchdowns four times. The 13-time Pro Bowler also led the New Orleans Saints to winning the Super Bowl in 2010.
“He obviously is a very timing, rhythm thrower, which is what I was. But I think he showed us what kind of athlete he was last week by taking off and running, going outside the system, and going and winning that game (against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship),” said Brees.
And like Drew Brees, Brock Purdy is often referred to as a “game manager” by those who continue to doubt him and his abilities. To his credit, Purdy, like Brees, has demonstrated that he is unaffected by his detractors.
