Breaking News: Aggies to Hire Stoops
It appears Texas A&M is going to hire Kentucky Head Coach Mark Stoops to be their new Head Coach.
Texas A&M fired former Head Coach Jimbo Fisher on November 12 after a 51-10 victory over Mississippi State, still owing him an incredible $76 million. Since then, Elijah Robinson has served as the Aggies Interim Head Coach.
With the hiring of Stoops, the Aggies head coaching job is off the table, marking the 2nd Power 5 job to be filled this weekend. Michigan State hired Jonathan Smith away from Oregon State earlier Saturday.
Who is new Texas A&M Head Coach Mark Stoops?
Brother of former Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops, Mark Stoops has been the head coach at Kentucky for the last 11 seasons. During his 11 seasons in Lexington, Stoops compiled a 73-64 record and coached in 7 bowl game appearances.
Prior to becoming Kentucky’s Head Coach, Stoops served as the defensive coordinator at Arizona (2004-2009) and Florida State (2010-2012)
What This Means for A&M
With the swift move to hire a new head coach, A&M has likely stabilized what could have been a very volatile situation. With coach firings, many players look to enter the transfer portal and recruits start looking elsewhere. With Stoops’ reputation, the chances to retain their current players should be fairly high. In addition, A&M should be able to keep the majority of their 2024 recruiting class with this move.
What This Means for Kentucky
The Wildcats must now scramble to hire a new Head Coach before their current roster gets pillaged by other teams. Their recruiting class must also be protected. Currently sitting as the #22 class according to On3, the Wildcats will need to reassure their committed recruits as they head into National Signing Day.
