Monday Night Football is ready to kick off as the first game is a battle of the two top teams entering the season in the AFC East as the Buffalo Bills travel to MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Jets.
The Bills were able to make the playoffs last season as the AFC East Champions and made the Divisional Round before losing to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Jets missed the postseason with a 7-10 record but really changed the look of the team around during the offseason to become legitimate contenders.
Can the Jets begin the season by showing they are the new team to be feared in the AFC East, or will the Bills prove they still reign supreme?

    Bills Key Stats

The Buffalo Bills have been at the top of the AFC East as they finished last season with a 13-3 record and were the second seed in the AFC. They were able to pick up a 34-31 home win over the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card Round but fell to the Cincinnati Bengals at home 27-10 during the Divisional Round.

This team has a lot of speculation surrounding it as quarterback Josh Allen dealt with an elbow injury throughout the second half of the season and has been the team’s leading rusher. During the offseason, Buffalo tried to get a legitimate running back as they signed Nyheim Hines to be the starter, but an offseason freak injury will cause him to miss the entire season.

Last season, the Bills were second in yards per game (397.6) and points per game (28.4) but need to figure out how to continue improving. There were some offseason issues with wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and reports are that he is, or at least was, unhappy with the organization.

The defense is led by linebacker Von Miller, who was placed on Injured Reserve and will miss the first four games of the regular season at least as he recovers from his torn ACL. The Bills finished last season sixth in yards per game allowed (319.1) and second in points per game given up (17.9).

The Bills are going to need to continue playing at this level and seeing some more progression out of Josh Allen, as his turnovers were a problem last season. With so much of the passing and rushing attack depending on him, they need to find ways to protect him from taking too much impact.

    Jets Key Stats

The New York Jets were 7-10 a year ago and finished without a postseason appearance for a 12th consecutive season. The team felt it was time for a change at the quarterback position and made an incredible splash as they traded with the Green Bay Packers for future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Jets offense has some promising pieces, such as Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall. They blended the youth with former Packers wide receivers Allan Lazard and Randall Cobb, as well as signing Mecole Hardman.
Another incredible addition came in the last few weeks as free agent running back Dalvin Cook signed with the Jets on a one-year deal after being released by the Minnesota Vikings. This offense is going to take a massive step in the right direction with more solid quarterback play to lead the group with some veteran leadership.
The defense was the star portion of the team in 2022, as they were fourth in points per game allowed (18.6) and yards per game (311.1). With Defensive Rookie of the Year cornerback Sauce Gardner and also having a bolstered defensive line with Carl Lawson, Quinnen Williams, Jermaine Johnson, and John Franklin-Myers to rotate in, this team should be scary good.
There are a lot of expectations put on this Jets team, and this will be interesting to see what the leap they take is.

    Game Prediction

The New York Jets were able to split their two games with the Buffalo Bills last season and almost won both outright. This Jets defense is legitimate, and with another year of experience, they should do well. The Bills have an okay defensive line that should test the weakest part of the Jets team, their offensive line.

However, I think the offensive line concerns are a bit overblown, and the Jets should be able to do well. Aaron Rodgers in Game 1 as a Jet should dominate, as he had two touchdowns and one interception last season against the Bills as a member of the Packers. This Bills team looks to be regressing a bit as they want to see Allen stay in the pocket more.

Go with the New York Jets to cover the spread and win the game outright as well to kick off the new era of the New York Jets.
