There is more buzz about the possibility the Minnesota Vikings could land the former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield in free agency this offseason. The Vikings have about a week to extend Kirk Cousins, or Minnesota could be desperate to find a signal caller for the 2024 season.
Kirk Cousins could be moving to Atlanta shortly
Cousins is reportedly “seriously considering” moving his family to Atlanta. Such a move would imply he’s planning to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, which, by the way, was the talk of Indianapolis at the NFL Combine last week. However, during lying season, Cousins could be making a threat so the Vikings can throw more money his way this offseason.
But there’s only so much coin to go around in Minneapolis. Per Over The Cap, the Vikings have $37 million in cap space before free agency. But much of that could be eaten up by extending wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
If they want to sign Cousins, the Vikings would also have to have a bold plan to add significant pieces in free agency. The aging quarterback said he wants to play for a Super Bowl contender on his next contract.
With the Vikings’ future uncertain with Cousins, another option is picking up steam this week.
Baker Mayfield could be headed to Minnesota
Per Mike Florio with NBC Sports, the Vikings are in play for Mayfield if they cannot extend Cousins:
“Unless another team wakes up and makes a move. The problem is that there’s really only one other team that could even be in the mix. And that team would need Mayfield only if its current starter leaves for the Falcons.
Other teams with a need at quarterback want to go younger. In comparison to Cousins, Mayfield is more than six years younger.
So it’s most likely Tampa Bay. With a chance that Minnesota gets involved. If Minnesota ends up looking for a new quarterback.”
The Minnesota Vikings receiver corps should excite Mayfield
Mayfield would be an excellent replacement for Cousins in Minnesota. Baker nearly won Comeback Player of the Year in 2023 for his play with the Buccaneers. His best wide receiver in Tampa Bay was Mike Evans. Imagine Mafied getting an upgrade to throw to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson.
