The Atlanta Falcons won’t pick until no. 8 in the 2024 NFL Draft, but with quarterback being their biggest need in the offseason, it’s unlikely they would be able to get one of the class’ top QBs when it’s their turn to select.
With that being said, it might makes sense for them to trade up in order to have a shot at the best QB candidate they can get this 2024.
That is exactly what the latest NFL mock draft from Lance Zierlein has the Falcons doing, noting they could pull a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers for the no. 5 overall pick.
Atlanta Falcons Trade Up To Draft Drake Maye
Zierlein predicts the Falcons making a trade with the Chargers for the no. 5 pick and using it to select Drake Maye out of North Carolina.
While the parameters of the deal were not discussed–including what else the Falcons will give up in return along with the no. 8 pick–Zierlein did explain why it makes sense for Atlanta to make a move.
“New head coach Raheem Morris has plenty of offensive weapons, but he needs someone to run the show. Maye was inconsistent last season, but he has fantastic traits and high upside, so Atlanta makes a move for the QB,” Zierlein wrote.
It remains to be seen if the Falcons will be able to actually pull off a deal, but if Maye does end up available at no. 5, it might not be a bad idea for them to move up. Maye had been largely projected to go within the Top 3, so he could be a big steal beyond that.
Atlanta Falcons’ QB Situation
Desmond Ridder started in 13 of the 15 games he played in 2023. Unfortunately, he was underwhelming for the most part as the Atlanta Falcons finished with a 7-10 record on the season and missed the playoffs.
Ridder tallied just 2836 yards and 12 touchdowns on a 64.2 percent completion. Making matters worse, he had 12 interceptions, the seventh-most in the NFL in the season.
Drake Maye, on the other hand, largely impressed for North Carolina throughout his three years with the team. While he seemed to regress late in the 2023 campaign, what he has shown is enough to raise confidence about his ceiling and potential.
Maye finished his Tar Heels career with 8018 yards and 63 touchdowns on 64.9 percent pass completion against just 16 interceptions.
Sure enough, he could be the QB that the Falcons need to get them back to contention under new head coach Raheem Morris.
