The Pittsburgh Steelers have a big challenge ahead of the 2024 season under Arthur Smith. The former Atlanta Falcons head coach thinks that his team is not being assertive enough when it comes to the game’s most important moments.
In response to this, the 42-year-old proposed an offensive approach that would split the fanbase in two. One-half of the fanbase would probably fall in love with his forward-thinking approach, while the other half would be wary of his positivity and remember his failures at the Atlanta Falcons.
Arthur Smith wants the Pittsburgh Steelers to be more aggressive in red-zone situations
Matthew Marczi of the Steelers Depot published a piece that revealed Smith’s mentality to changing the Pittsburgh Steelers offense into one of the best in the entire AFC North. According to him, the approach they must take is simple in idea but complex in execution.
“Red zone, that’s what we have to do,” Smith told Missi Matthews during a one-on-one interview for the Steelers’ website. “We’ve got to score points. You’ve got to have those four-point swings and create touchdowns.”
In other words, stop settling for field goals.
It’s a daring plan that would require a total overhaul of the tactics and mentality of the entire Steelers offense. However, Marczi also pointed out the biggest problem Smith will face with rebuilding the Steelers offense.
But the Steelers offense was so bad last season that it didn’t just struggle to score in the red zone. It struggled to reach the red zone. They only had 42 trips inside the 20 all season, fourth-worst in the NFL. Nine teams had at least 60 trips in the red zone. There also seems to be a correlation between the frequency of access and the rate of success.
If there’s anything that possibly helped Smith land the OC job with the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s how he can find outstanding football players through the draft and free agency. If he helps Mike Tomlin identify the right pieces that would push the Steelers into the deeper rounds of the playoffs, then his reputation will be restored.
Until that happens, Atlanta Falcons fans would advise their Pittsburgh Steelers counterparts to not trust his words too much.
