The Arizona Cardinals have been one of the worst teams in the NFL with a 2-10 record and have released one of their top players as it has been announced that tight end Zach Ertz will be released by the team. Ertz reportedly requested his release so he could join a team that is contending and make a run at another Super Bowl ring.
This was first reported by none other than future Pro Football Hall of Famer JJ Watt.
Trying new things in retirement, so let’s steal @AdamSchefter job for a day…

The Arizona Cardinals have been without Zach Ertz for the last month as he has been on Injured Reserve with a strained quadriceps and has not played since Oct. 22 against the Seattle Seahawks. So far this season, he has recorded 27 receptions on 43 targets for 187 yards (6.9 yards per catch) with a touchdown reception.
It will be interesting to see what teams will be interested in the 33-year-old tight end as he has made three Pro Bowls and could have some productive seasons left in him.
What do the Arizona Cardinals do going forward?
The Arizona Cardinals should have had this discussion with Zach Ertz before the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline and could have recouped some extra draft capital entering the 2024 NFL draft. They Arizona Cardinals have accumulated 11 draft picks in the 2024 NFL draft class and could continue building for the future.
It seems as if the team is trying to go into the future and not compete with the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers. Getting young talent and essentially creating the next version of the Houston Texans out in the desert. Quarterback Kyler Murray is potentially on the move as the franchise looks to hit the reset button and get a rookie quarterback to develop.
What teams should be interested in Zach Ertz?
This feels like a given at this point but expect to hear the Philadelphia Eagles on the phone with him to return to the team. He played his first 8.5 seasons with the Eagles before joining the Cardinals. There are going to be other teams interested such as the Baltimore Ravens with the Mark Andrews injury likely costing him the season.
He can be a nice depth piece for whatever team wants another passing option.
