Report: Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Took Pay Cut To Accept Job

The Arizona Cardinals head coach could have made more money

New Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was a highly sought-after defensive coordinator. His Philadelphia Eagles defense had been cashing after records not seen since the 1985 Chicago Bears. Now a report’s come out that the Eagles were willing to pay big time to keep Gannon in Philadelphia.

Gannon was hired by the Cardinals a day after the Eagles lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona. The Eagles’ defense did not have a good second half. However, the Eagles brass had no intentions of letting Gannon go easily.

According to Peter King with Football Morning In America on NBC Sports, Gannon accepted the Cardinals head coaching job knowing he could make more money as an Eagles defensive coordinator in 2023:

“I loved Philly. I love Mr. Lurie [owner Jeffrey Lurie]. I love Howie Roseman. I love Nick Sirianni. They came back and they were like, here’s a new offer. It’s gonna pay you more than being a head coach. That’s cool and I loved it there but I wanted to be a head coach and I was excited about this because of Mr. Bidwill—Michael, as he would say—[GM] Monti Ossenfort, and Kyler.”

Those are high stakes for Gannon. As the Arizona Cardinals head coach, he’ll inherit a team that underperformed during the 2022 season leading to Kliff Kingsbury being fired a year after getting a contract extension. He’ll have to hope quarterback Kyler Murray, who has as much potential as weight on the Cardinals’ salary cap, will have a better season than last year.

Gannon has made some big hires with his coordinators this weekend. Drew Pretzing will be their offensive coordinator, and Nick Rallis will be their defensive coordinator. Neither have coordinator experience in the NFL.
