Andy Reid’s future with the Kansas City Chiefs is reportedly murkier than the 65-year-old head coach would like to admit publicly. Mike Florio with NBC Sports recently said on the Zach Gelby show via CBS Sports Radio the Chiefs are bracing for the possibility of Reid retiring at the end of their postseason.
Andy Reid’s retirement is on the Chiefs radar
Reid said this month that he hasn’t thought about retirement yet. He’s too busy getting his team ready for the playoffs. However, per the Daily Mail’s transcription of Florio’s comments, the NFL insider said the Chiefs think there’s a possibility Reid will retire if he wins the Super Bowl in Las Vegas this February:
‘Although I could say at some level, the closer they get tot he Super Bowl, if guys start thinking maybe Andy Reid could walk away it gives them the little kick to let him walk out with a trophy. But we will see.
‘Ever since I caught wind of the possibility, that the Chiefs are bracing for the possibility of Reid leaving – not saying he will, but I think there is reason to believe the Chiefs have it on the radar screen – then Mahomes, there is only one and the Chiefs have him.”
Would Bill Belichick be willing to wait out Reid’s decision?
Reid is the oldest active coach in the league after Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick completed their coaching duties this season. Carroll and Belichick are in their 70s, so Reid is a youngster compared to some of the recent giants of football coaching, including Nick Saban (at the college level), who left their jobs this offseason.
Belichick is one of those 70-year-olds who is known to be looking for head coach employment. He is a candidate for the Atlanta Falcons opening and is set to have his second interview with the Falcons this weekend.
One has to wonder if Belichick would be willing to wait out the Chiefs’ postseason to get a gauge on Reid’s plans for 2024. There would be no better job vacancy in the NFL for Belichick to take over than the one in Kansas City next season. The Falcons don’t have a franchise quarterback–Belichick would have no issue there with Mahomes.
Belichick could have a rebuild with the Falcons
Belichick doesn’t want to go through a rebuild at his age. The Chiefs don’t want to waste a season or two of Mahomes’ prime for a green coach to lead their team to postseason success. Belichick and the Chiefs would be the perfect match if Reid retires for an immediate Super Bowl run.
Belichick would have his best opportunity to win a title without Tom Brady in Kansas City. But does Belichick have the patience to wait out the potential job opening?
There’s no guarantee the Falcons, Chargers, Commanders, or Raiders would have a job opening waiting for Belichick if he pauses up until (if) the Chiefs make it to the Super Bowl.
