Adam Schefter, perhaps the most famous ESPN insider reported today that the former Stanford coach David Shaw was interviewed by the Los Angeles Chargers for their head coaching vacancy. The Chargers have interviewed a few candidates now and they are set to interview Mike Vrabel as well. There are many rumors that they are going to go after Jim Harbaugh as well.
The way that he phrased the report though has come under fire from many fans on X, formally known as Twitter for being quite disrespectful. Schefter specifically pointed out that the Chargers were now in compliance with the Rooney Rule because they had interviewed Shaw, but that hints at Shaw being undeserving of the position and that he was simply just interviewed for the team to be in compliance with the rule.
Adam Schefter Under Fire From Fans For Disrespectful Tweet
“Chargers completed an interview with David Shaw for their head coaching job,” Schefter wrote. They’re now in compliance with the Rooney Rule.”
That last sentence is what is getting major pushback from the NFL world that he had to mention that as if that was the only reason for Shaw getting the interview. Schefter followed-up that post with these remarks:
“Former Stanford HC David Shaw has long been a target of NFL teams. In the past, he has resisted NFL overtures. But now, in back-to-back years, he has been interviewed for the Broncos and Chargers head coaching jobs.”
While Schefter may be alluding to something that is true, that perhaps they were just interviewing the Stanford coach to check off a box while they are actually looking to hire Vrabel or Harbaugh, but that is very disrespectful to the coach to insinuate such a thing.
Adam Schefter Has To Walk Back His Tweet
While now it seems that the Chargers did not really have interest in Shaw and they just wanted to satisfy the Rooney Rule, Schefter’s tweet still lacks tact and awareness by insinuating that all together. Many fans on X let him have it as he should not have said the quiet part out loud.
For an ESPN insider who has been around the NFL for a long time, this is a rare scenario where we have seen a lack of tact. Rightfully so he is getting shafted in the media and he had to walk back his tweet for implying that Shaw was only interviewed to satisfy the rule. This will definitely be a one time mistake for the insider as after getting railed by so many fans he is sure to not make this same mistake again.
Schefter saying the quiet part out loud weird move altogether. https://t.co/xnQOGrdvAh
