Even with all of the new rules in place, NFL quarterbacks are prone to getting injured like everyone else. Unfortunately, Week 8 featured five different men who were unable to finish their Sunday start under center. Here they are, and here is how each team will handle the situation moving forward.

Week 8’s NFL Quarterback Injury Report
Minnesota Vikings: Kirk Cousins
Unfortunately, early signs are indicating that Kirk Cousins won’t suit up again this season after tearing his right Achilles. Cousins, who has been in Minnesota since 2018, started Sunday’s win before rookie Jaren Hall took over. Hall is the only other QB active on the roster right now since Nick Mullens is on the IR. Sean Mannion is on the practice squad and will likely be elevated before Minnesota’s next game.
New York Giants: Tyrod Taylor
Already filling in for an injured Daniel Jones, veteran Tyrod Taylor was one of two NFL quarterbacks to leave after hurting his ribs this week. Taylor was taken to the hospital after swiftly being ruled out for the contest, leaving Tommy DeVito as the only healthy quarterback on New York’s roster. Jones isn’t expected back until Week 10 at the earliest, while Taylor’s status hasn’t been updated (which probably isn’t good), so the Giants need outside help. The offense may have another unwatchable week ahead of them.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Kenny Pickett
The other NFL quarterback with damaged ribs, Kenny Pickett was replaced by Mitch Trubisky in Pittsburgh’s Week 8 game. With a quick turnaround into Thursday’s game, the Steelers probably won’t have their second-year gunslinger for the battle. Trubisky is an early favorite for the start, while Mason Rudolph is still with the team and ready to serve as Trubisky’s backup.
Atlanta Falcons: Desmond Ridder
Many fans have been clamoring for Desmond Ridder to be benched and thought their wishes had come true on Sunday afternoon. Instead, Ridder was pulled to undergo concussion testing. Although he passed, Ridder did not return to the game. Since he’s healthy and has his head coach’s full support, Ridder will likely pick up another start next Sunday with Taylor Heinicke serving as his backup again.
Los Angeles Rams: Matthew Stafford
One of the few active NFL quarterbacks to start and win a Super Bowl, Matthew Stafford couldn’t finish Sunday’s contest after injuring the thumb on his throwing hand. The severity is unknown, but an injured right thumb could impact his throws for the remainder of the season. Brett Rypien filled in, yet behind him, there is a giant question mark. Rookie Stetson Bennett has been on the Non-Football Injury list since September, and no other quarterbacks are on the roster. Someone may be getting a job in Los Angeles soon.
