NFL Week 7 is coming to a close, and as usual, fans are going to overreact to yesterday’s results.
What do I think the biggest overreactions are around the league? Here are some of the biggest ones.
1. New York Giants Have a Quarterback Controversy
By far, the biggest overreaction to yesterday’s results is believing that there is a quarterback controversy for the New York Giants. Tyrod Taylor has taken the reigns the last two games while Daniel Jones deals with a neck injury.
Yesterday, the Giants secured their first home win of the season and ended a 14-quarter offensive touchdown drought.
Admittedly, Taylor did not perform badly in this game. He had 279 passing yards and two touchdown passes. He also has not turned the ball over in either of his starts.
However, there are two big factors that we need to keep in mind here. The first is that RB Saquon Barkley has been available during both of these starts after missing the prior three games due to a high ankle sprain. Barkley even had one of the touchdowns yesterday.
There are also rumors about head coach Brian Daboll. There is speculation that he conducted the offensive meetings before the game vs. the Washington Commanders.
Regardless, there is no reason to overreact to this. At the end of the day, Taylor has still only put up 23 points and arguably cost his team a win during his two starts.
2. Miami Dolphins Are Overrated
Last night, the Miami Dolphins suffered a 31-17 road loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. There has been a consistent theme with the Dolphins so far this season. That theme is beating up on bad teams but struggling against the best teams on their schedule.
The Dolphins currently have a 5-2 record. The record of the teams they beat is a combined 8-25. However, the two teams they lost to have a combined record of 10-4.
Despite this, Miami still has good things going for them. Those are all on the offensive side of the ball, considering they lead the league in passing yards per game (300), rushing yards per game (162.3), and points per game (34.3).
WR Tyreek Hill is even making a case for NFL MVP with 902 receiving yards and seven touchdown receptions.
Their schedule is also favorable. Of their 10 remaining games, just four are against teams currently over .500.
Plus, two of those games are at home. The Dolphins have not lost a home game yet this season.
While the chase for the top seed just got more difficult, the Dolphins are still a very solid playoff contender with hopes of winning the AFC East.
3. Davante Adams Needs to Take a Step Back
WR Davante Adams has been in the spotlight this season. There are rumors that he has a rocky relationship with his Las Vegas Raiders and even asked to be traded. Part of this had to do with his role on the team.
Well, yesterday’s performance did not help this image. He was targeted 12 times and had just seven receptions in the Raiders’ loss against the Chicago Bears. One of those targets was a drop by Adams in the end zone when he was by himself.
What is interesting is that, admittedly, the Raiders have had more success this season when Adams is not as involved. Las Vegas is 2-0 when he has fewer than six receptions in a game. When he has six or more receptions, they are just 1-4.
However, the Raiders lack the talent to spread the ball around more often. The only other WR putting up decent numbers this season has been Jakobi Meyers, who, ironically, has more touchdown receptions than Adams so far.
There are clearly some issues going on behind the scenes, but giving up on an elite wide receiver like Adams is not the answer.
