    Why you should be optimistic

    KU Schedule 1

It’s never too early in the preseason for Kansas Jayhawk Football Schedule prediction post.

There isn’t a fanbase in America that needs to see improvement like Jayhawk fans (except maybe University of Arizona fans).

Let’s look at the positives.  KU opened it’s 90,000 sq/ft indoor practice facility in 2019.  An all weather, multi purpose facility, the investment of showing recruits that Kansas is serious about competing are now showing return on investment.  KU Indoor

The KU Athletic Department and Football front office professionals have largely closed the Scholarship debt gap.  There was a point four years ago when only 43% of the players dressing for games were on scholarship.  Universities do not disclose scholarship numbers, but most believe KU will be in the high 80s for scholarship utilization by 2024.  When people talk about rebuilding, this is how long it has taken to recover from some poor decisions since 2010.

Fixing the team on the field will eventually lead to a willingness from donors to fund a planned 350 million dollar upgrade to Memorial Stadium.  Until the team becomes a consistent winner on the field, Athletic Director Travis Goff knows it will be a challenge to upgrade the stadium:

“You have to layer on tangible indicators of what’s different about Kansas football, and there’s nothing more tangible, as a demonstrative indicator about our commitment to where we’re trying to go, than that massive facility,” Goff said.

The team of Goff and Head Coach Lance Leipold seem to be the team to bring Kansas Football back to relevance.  Goff, a KU alum, and Leipold, a proven coach who can build programs and win, have the challenge of stabilizing Jayhawk Football.  Jayhawk fans are tentatively optimistic.  It has been hard to excited in Lawrence since 2010.  But this season feels different…

    The Schedule

    Kansas Jayhawk Football Schedule prediction.

The Jayhawks open the season with Tennessee Tech on September 2 at 7 PM, placing Jayhawk fans who have children playing Kansas High School football in a dilemma and guaranteeing many parents will miss out on important plays in both games.  The Golden Eagles, an FCS team, went 3-8 last year.  Prediction:  KU 48 Tenn Tech 10.  Jayhawks 1-0.

Week 2 is an away game in Morgantown, WV against the West Virginia Mountaineers.  The Moutaineers went 6-7 last year, but played well at home, going 4-2.  This will be a great indicator for the Jayhawks season…a win here is a great sign.  Jayhawks win a close one, 42-38.  Jayhawks 2-0.

Week 3 is another away game at Houston.  Houston went 10-2 last year, losing their season opener against Texas Tech, then winning 9 in a row before losing to Cincinnatti.  They beat Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl to finish a great season.  Close game, but Houston wins 37-35.  Jayhawks 2-1.

The Jayhawks welcome Duke to Lawrence in week four and America braces for the Basketball jokes that will be made at the KU football teams expense.  Duke beat Kansas pretty handily last year, but this year is a different story.  Jayhawks win 55-21.  Jayhawks 3-1.

    KU Helmets

October 1st brings Iowa State to Lawrence and begins a run of difficult games.  Iowa State is good–they beat Kansas 59-7 last year.  This year will be a much closer game, but Iowa State gets the win, 45-31.  Jayhawks 3-2.

The TCU Horned Frogs come to Lawrence to close out a three game home stand.  These are not the Gary Patterson-era Horned Frogs, and after barely beating the Jayhawks last year, they fall to a much better team.  Jayhawks win 42-30.  Jayhawks 4-2.

This is my upset call of the year…the Jayhawks travel to Norman to play the new-look Sooners.  Before you dismiss this as unrealistic, consider:   Brent Venables has never been a head coach before.  He is overseeing a 50/50 staff of LIncoln Riley’s leftovers and his coaches.  Oklahoma lost both Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams to the transfer portal.  Kansas wins 31-21.  Jayhawks 5-2.

KU travels to Waco to play Baylor on October 22nd.  Baylor went 10-2 last year with impressive wins over Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Ole Miss.  Waco is a hard place to play…KU loses 38-20.  Jayhawks 5-3.

After the Baylor game, the Jayhawks have a week off before welcoming Oklahoma State to Memorial Stadium on November 5th.  A Halloween weekend off for the Jayhawk players is not helpful.  Mike Gundy drops the hammer.  Oklahoma State 49-KU 28.  Jayhawks 5-4.

The Jayhawks travel to Lubbock to play Texas Tech on November 12th. In a Jayhawk revenge game, they win a close one as the season is winding down, making them bowl eligble.  KU 33-TT 12.  Jayhawks 6-5.

    KU upset Texas

Fresh off signing Arch Manning, Texas comes to Lawrence for the Jayhawks final home game with revenge on their minds.  Last year’s Jayhawk victory over Texas stung the Longhorns.  The truth at UT is that last year’s 5-7 finish, with a rough five game losing streak at the end of the season is going to continue.  KU wins again 32-17.  Jayhawks 7-5.

The Governors Cup and Sunflower Showdown

The Kansas State Wildcats host the Jayhawks in the season finale.  Kansas State has not lost to Kansas since 2009, a streak of 13 games that tastes like acid in Lawrence.  While the Jayhawks still hold a 64 to 50 edge in all time wins, nobody in Manhattan cares because there are 13 year old kids who have never lost to KU.  In this farm state, those kids will go from birth to legally driving without ever losing to the Jayhawks.  Well, no more.  KU wins in Manhattan 35-21, ending the streak bringing the Governors Cup to Lawrence and sealing the Sunflower Showdown, because we all know K State can’t beat KU in Basketball.  Jayhawks finish the season 8-5, bowl eligible for the first time since 2008.
