When the San Francisco 49ers opened up the 2022 NFL season, all eyes were on young quarterback Trey Lance. He had become the new face of the franchise and was the quarterback that many thought the franchise would build around for years to come. Unfortunately for Lance, that ship seems to have come and already sailed away in San Francisco.
After going down with a rough injury that ended his season, Lance had to step aside and watch Jimmy Garoppolo take over again. Garoppolo played well, but then went down with a season-ending injury of his own. After that injury, rookie quarterback and Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy took over and did not look back.
Purdy appears to be the new franchise face in town, although he too suffered an injury in the team’s playoff loss against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.
Now, heading into the NFL offseason, the 49ers are looking at Purdy as their current starter. However, they are also expected to pursue Tom Brady when free agency opens up. That could leave Lance looking for a new job elsewhere on the trade market.
If that ends up being the case, let’s dive in and take a look at two teams who should try to trade for Trey Lance.
Who Should Try To Pull Off Big Trade For 49ers’ Trey Lance?
Minnesota Vikings
Let’s be honest, it’s time for the Vikings to consider their future at the quarterback position. Kirk Cousins once again failed in a big playoff game and simply is not going to be the guy in Minnesota for much longer. Making a trade for Trey Lance would give the Vikings a future under center, or possibly even a present if he can beat Cousins out for the job.
With a wide receiver like Justin Jefferson, the Vikings cannot afford to be clueless at the quarterback position following Cousins. Lance could easily end up being the long-term future for the franchise.
Depending on the price tag that it would take to acquire Lance, the Vikings should aggressively pursue this option. Lance has the arm to be a star at the NFL level and has the athleticism to make plays himself if needed.
The Vikings are in a rough situation with Cousins as the only legitimate starting quarterback candidate. It’s time to bring in real competition and trading for Lance would give the team just that.

Las Vegas Raiders
Next up, the Raiders are going to be a very interesting team to watch this offseason. Derek Carr is expected to be traded to begin a new era of football in Las Vegas. A trade for Trey Lance could make a ton of sense.
Las Vegas would have a great supporting cast for a young quarterback like Lance. They have arguably the best wide receiver in the game in Davante Adams and pieces like Hunter Renfrow and Darren Waller as well. Josh Jacobs was one of the best running backs in the NFL this season, and while the Raiders still need to re-sign him he is expected back in town.
Moving on from Carr is a huge and hard decision to make in and of itself. The Raiders cannot afford to miss on the replacement they bring in. Tom Brady is going to be a potential fit for the Raiders as well, but if they miss on him in free agency a trade for Lance could be a great Plan B.
Carr has been the clear-cut franchise quarterback for years in Las Vegas. If they’re truly moving on from him, it would make sense to target a top drafted quarterback to replace him. Lance has true star potential and a trade for the Raiders could unlock that potential.
