After three Super Bowls in the last five years, the Kansas City Chiefs may soon be relocating to another part of the country, with the most likely destination being Kansas. Last month, voters in Jackson County, where Arrowhead Stadium is located, rejected a sales tax measure that would have helped to find renovations, which have prompted the team to consider other options after 2030.
Clark Hunt, who is a chief chairman and owner, has said that it is possible that the team would move to Kansas to stay in the area to be in a different county. However, anything is still on the table.
Fans and Players Have Pushed Back From Ownership
There is a belief that when things are bad, everything looks worse, and when things go well, small issues don’t seem to matter. This is not the case when it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs’ ownership. Despite all of the unfilled success, the NFLPA voted that the Chiefs have the worst ownership in the entire league.
This sentiment, as well as all the money that has gone into the Chiefs, has made fans reluctant to pay taxes to help fund renovations. Many feel that the ownership of the team, which clearly brought in tons of money for the last couple of years and should be pay the entire bill. Even though it’s common for teams to ask for taxes and help, with the feelings around the ownership, it makes sense that fans would vote against the additional sales tax.
Patrick Mahomes Wants to Stay In Kansas City
I’m not sure there’s a single Kansas City Chiefs fan who actually wants the team to relocate; for the amount of money that it brings to the city and for the focus that it puts on the city, it doesn’t make sense why anybody would want the team to move. This includes Patrick Mahomes. In an interview with the Impaulsive podcast, Mahomes shared some of the following statements:
“You can walk down the street and people come up and are like ‘We love what you do, we love your work’ and they want to let you have a great day they’re not trying to take pictures. The people make the city.”
“The best part of Kansas City is that they love it but they embrace everybody that comes to the games and they tailgate it. There’s not a ton to do so they really enjoy those football games.”
Mahomes is also opening a steakhouse with teammate Travis Kelce in the Kansas City area. He and his wife are invested in the local Kansas City women’s soccer team and have been seen working and doing workshops with Kansas City children regularly during the off-season. In other words, it’s clear that Patrick Mahomes really does care for and love the Kansas City area.
Renovations Need To Be Done For Kansas City Chiefs, Royals
The Kansas City Chiefs, as well as the MLB Kansas City Royals, are in need of some renovations. One of these renovations is to potentially make a stadium that could be domed for football. Last year during the playoffs, Kansas City went through one of the coldest football games on record, and multiple fans had to be taken to the hospital and had parts of their body amputated because of frostbite and other freezing-related injuries
Additionally, both stadiums are among the oldest in the NFL, and with a changing landscape of how sports are viewed, both stadiums desperately need to adapt and provide more amenities, options, and different seating types for different levels and styles of fans.
