The New York Jets ultimately decided not to bring back Aaron Rodgers last season despite the four-time NFL MVP’s unprecedented recovery from a career-threatening Achilles injury. Instead, the Jets opted to err on the side of caution with the expectation of getting a fully healthy Rodgers back in time for the start of the new season.
Now that the 2024 campaign is upon us, you can be sure that the Jets will do everything they can to keep Rodgers healthy throughout the season. This could include recruiting added protection to the offensive line to fend off opposing defenses.
New York Jets Linked to Veteran Tackle Connor Williams
Connor Williams’ campaign with the Miami Dolphins last term was cut short due to a season-ending ACL tear. Recent reports, however, have indicated that the 27-year-old should be ready to go for Week 1 of the new season.
Currently, Williams is a free agent after seeing his contract with the Dolphins come to an end. NFL reporter Bryan DeArdo believes that it would be in the Jets’ best interest to consider bringing in the veteran to their squad:
“Protecting 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers is the Jets’ top priority, so adding a veteran like Williams to the group only makes sense. The fact that starting interior lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker is coming off back-to-back season-ending injuries only adds to New York being a possibility for Williams. Money, though, is one of the things that makes the Jets a less likely scenario,” DeArdo wrote.
As DeArdo noted, however, Williams’ salary demands could be a major stumbling block for a potential deal. Nevertheless, Williams could be worth his weight in gold for the Jets.
Connor Williams Linked to Other Teams
It is also worth noting, though, that given his track record, it isn’t surprising that Williams has also been linked to a few other teams. DeArdo himself has identified four other teams that could potentially show interest in signing Williams before the new season starts.
The Philadelphia Eagles will be doing whatever it can to fill the void that Jason Kelce left after his retirement, and Williams could help their cause. Much like the Jets, the Chicago Bears will also want as much protection as they can get for young quarterback Caleb Williams. The New York Giants and the Los Angeles Chargers have also been named as potential landing spots for Williams, who appears to be a wanted man heading into 2024.
