The New York Giants signed eight undrafted free agents and it will be interesting to see how they perform during training camp. New York is in a total rebuild of the roster and general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll do not feel like they are on the hot seats at all.
The Giants are trying to build the roster from the ground up. Malik Nabers, the wide receiver from the LSU Tigers, was the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. New York tried to trade up with the New England Patriots for the third overall selection to get quarterback Drake Maye from the North Carolina Tar Heels, but New England said no thanks to the deal.
So, the eight free agents that the New York Giants signed who were undrafted are Casey Rogers, a defensive tackle from Oregon, Ovie Oghoufo, a defensive end from LSU, Marcellus Johnson, an offensive lineman from Missouri, John Jiles, a wide receiver from West Florida, Alex Johnson, a defensive back from UCLA, Jake Kubas, an offensive lineman from North Dakota State, Ayir Asante, a wide receiver from Wyoming, and Jude McAtamney from Rutgers.
There are always undrafted free agents throughout training camp that always impress whether it is with the New York Giants or with another team. Which of the eight undrafted free agents have the best chance to make the New York Giants roster in 2024?
The Athletic’s Dan Duggan Thinks that Oregon Ducks Defensive Tackle Casey Rogers Has the Best Chance To Make the New York Giants Roster
Rogers is 6’4″ and weighs 294 lbs. He played with the Oregon Ducks last season and had 22 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. The reasoning that Dan Duggan of The Athletic gave for the New York Giants keeping Casey Rogers on the 53-man roster for this season is as follows:
“Rogers, who will turn 26 years old during his first NFL season, is No. 1 here because of the depth still needed along the interior defensive line. The Giants did not add a defensive lineman in the draft and there are not many known commodities behind Dexter Lawrence, Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Jordan Phillips. If younger players Jordon Riley and D.J. Davidson don’t show improvement, there could be a path for Rogers.”
These are very good points by Dan Duggan because outside of Dexter Lawrence, who is going to be relied upon at the defensive tackle position? Casey Rogers’s name will be very noticeable during New York Giants training camp.
