The New York Giants brought in quarterback Drew Lock this offseason to potentially be the backup quarterback for now. However, that all can change because according to NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo, Lock has a chance to compete with Daniel Jones for the starting quarterback job in training camp.
This is going to be the story all offseason long for the Giants. With New York not trading up for a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft or drafting one, this is where they are at for the moment. General manager Joe Schoen tried to trade for the number three pick with the New England Patriots for Drake Maye, but New England did not want to move down with the New York Giants.
General manager Joe Schoen is going to enter the 2024 season with Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito as the quarterbacks. Them not taking a quarterback this season means that he and head coach Brian Daboll have more job security than we originally thought. This is a total rebuild of the roster as they enter year three of the regime.
With the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Giants decided to take wide receiver Malik Nabers from LSU. Nabers will be a big piece of this offense moving forward and it was the right idea to take the best player available rather than reaching for a quarterback like J.J. McCarthy from Michigan.
New York Giants Drew Lock Has a Great Chance To Be the Week 1 Starter Over Daniel Jones
Lock has been with two NFL teams in his NFL career with the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. He now is on his third team with the New York Giants and was Geno Smith’s backup in Seattle a season ago. Smith will be the Seahawks starter this season. General manager of the Seattle Seahawks John Schneider said about him leaving a while ago by saying:
“Basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter.”
Drew Lock appeared in a few games last season and completed 63.2% of his passes for 543 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He is only 27 years old and will see what he can do during training camp with the New York Giants.
Daniel Jones is coming off of a Torn ACL and also some neck issues. General manager Joe Schoen thinks that Jones can be the Week 1 starter for the New York Giants, but that is obviously subjected to change. Everyone will watch this quarterback battle closely between Daniel Jones and Drew Lock.
