Former New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker was in tears recently when his alma mater afforded him a great honor. As it stands, the ex-NFL star is set to join Texas Tech football program’s Ring of Honor.
Welker, an undrafted wide receiver out of Texas Tech, went on to play 12 years in the league. After starting with the Miami Dolphins, the wide receiver found his stride with the New England Patriots, earning five consecutive Pro Bowl selections and leading the league in receptions three times.
Welker’s tenacity and playmaking ability made him a fan favorite in New England, where he set franchise records for receptions. He played a key role in the Patriots’ high-powered offenses, including the 2013 team that set the NFL record for most points scored in a season.
Following his time in New England, Welker had productive stints with the Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams before retiring. His status as one of the greatest undrafted players in NFL history was cemented, with Welker earning spots on the Patriots’ All-2000s, All-2010s, and All-Dynasty Teams.
In retirement, Welker transitioned to coaching. In 2021 he rejoined the Dolphins as an assistant coach coach, continuing his impact on the game.

Along with Welker, Thomas Howard and Andre Tillman will join the former Patriots star as this year’s class of inductees into the Ring of Honor. The event will be held on September 13 to 14 during the North Texas game weekend.
Without a doubt, Welker’s inclusion into this select few validates what he did in his NFL career. For sure, this great honor won’t be taken lightly by the former New England star.
