The Buffalo Bills entered the offseason in cap hell and had to restructure, trade, release, or let players walk in free agency to get under the cap.
However, the defensive end position was a position the Bills were able to retain most of their players. They re-signed A.J. Epenesa, reworked Von Miller’s contract, exercised Greg Rousseau’s 5th-year option, signed Casey Toohill, drafted Javon Solomon in the 5th round, and signed a pass rusher from the AFC South.

The Bills signed Dawuane Smoot to a one-year contract.
Smoot will be on his second team in his eighth year in the NFL.
He spent the first seven in Jacksonville.
Dawuane Smoot spent the first seven seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Smoot spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Jaguars. He had 133 tackles, 27 TFLs, 64 QB hits, 23.5 sacks, five pass deflections, and five forced fumbles in 99 regular season games and 17 starts.
Why the signing matters.
The Dawuane Smoot signing matters because he brings depth to the Bills pass rush. Von Miller, who is 35 years old, is coming off his worst season as a pro, and we don’t know if 2024 will be his last season with the Bills or how many good years he has left in the tank. Having Smoot helps provide stability to the position.
Finally, the Smoot signing matters because he has experience. He will be in his eighth year in the league and has 99 games under his belt. No defensive end other than Miller on the team has played more games than Smoot. Epenesa has played 58 games, Rousseau has played 46 games, and Toohill has played 57 games.
