By the looks of it, New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson really suffered a lot of damage before he was pulled out of their Week 15 game against the Miami Dolphins.
For those who missed it, Wilson exited Sunday’s contest before halftime due to a head injury that forced the Jets to put him into concussion protocol. Unknown to many, however, Wilson was already dealing with a number of concussion symptoms after taking a lot of beating in the short time he was on the field.
Instead of telling it to the Jets’ coaching staff, though, Wilson tried to fight through the pain until he could no longer endure it. Wilson’s mom revealed as much on her Instagram Stories on Monday, even noting that the young QB experienced blurred vision as a result.
Wilson was sacked four times before he was forced to leave. He finished with just 26 yards on 4-of-11 pass completion.
“Yesterday was a little bit rough, Zach took some really, really big hits and he fought through it and really tried to just stay out on the field. He didn’t want to go out, he didn’t want to stop playing — so he didn’t tell the sideline, the coaches, the trainers how he was really feeling and tried to just fight through it and be out there for his guys,” Lisa Wilson wrote, via ClutchPoints.
Mrs. Wilson furthered, “Finally, after one more blow to the head, he really started having problems with blurred vision and his depth perception. He really started worrying that he was actually going to hurt his team if he stayed out there because his vision was not right and how you can’t play like that.”
That’s certainly a concerning development for Zach Wilson and the New York Jets. While it’s commendable for the 24-year-old QB to show such immense toughness, it’s not good to see him risk his health and career for a few more moments on the field.
Hopefully, though, Wilson is able to clear the concussion protocol sooner rather than later. While the Jets are no longer in playoff contention, it will be nice to see the former BYU standout in good health.
New York Jets’ QB Plan Amid Zach Wilson’s Concussion
With Zach Wilson in the concussion protocol, the New York Jets are prepared to play in Week 16 without him.
If he’s able to clear the concussion protocol before they face the Washington Commanders, Wilson will start for the team. But if he can’t, backup quarterback Trevor Siemian will start in his place.
Aaron Rodgers, meanwhile, is still not medically cleared to play and won’t suit up. Even if he’s available, there’s no plan to even let him play after the Jets were eliminated from playoff contention.
