Now that the NFL season has concluded, football fans will be starting to look forward to the quality of football the XFL will provide.
While many have accepted that the XFL offered a lesser-quality product, it still provided entertaining football that filled the need for springtime football when the big league entered its long off-season.
It has also become the perfect platform for professionals who were either undrafted or out of a contract to impress teams and convince them to give them a contract.
However, that doesn’t mean that the XFL isn’t hugely influencing the game. In fact, Roger Goodell and company are thinking about adding one specific rule that is going to be implemented in this season’s United Football League.
NFL to implement XFL’s safer kickoff rules
One of the NFL’s biggest problems is protecting players from injury. It’s been reported that kickoffs and punts are some of the most dangerous plays in the game that can destroy a player’s career in an instant.
Due to this, the league is looking for a safer way of keeping their players safe, and they think the XFL found the right solution.
The Spun’s Andrew Gould writes about the potential change the league will implement:
Jeff Miller, the NFL’s executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy, said the league has “spent a fair amount of time” studying the kickoff.
“We have analyzed the XFL rule, which you know is a bit of a departure from ours. … We’ve analyzed that rule to see whether or not there’s things that we can learn from there,” Miller said.
In the XFL play, the kicker boots the ball from the team’s own 30 while the other 10 players line up at the opponent’s 35. Aside from the returner, the receiving team stands at the 30. Nobody beyond the kicker and returner can move until the returner touches the ball on a kick that must clear the 20-yard line.
Ensuring a football player’s ability to play more snaps not only extends their career but also makes the league a more fun affair.
Nobody likes to see players getting injured, and taking steps to prevent such gruesome injuries from happening will only make the league more appealing to a more general audience. It’s in the best interests of the NFL to make sure their players are able to play without worries.
