Dirk Koetter, the seasoned coach with extensive experience in both college and the NFL, is returning to Boise State once again. He will serve as the offensive coordinator under first-year head coach Spencer Danielson 1. Koetter, an Idaho native, previously coached the Broncos from 1998 to 2000. His coaching journey also includes stints as the head coach for Arizona State and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Dirk To The Rescue
In 2022, Koetter began as an offensive analyst for Boise State under former coach Andy Avalos. However, midway through the season, he took over the offensive coordinator duties. The Broncos went on to win the Mountain West Championship Game and finished with a solid 10-4 record. Despite this success, Koetter made it clear that he didn’t view it as a long-term role.
Bush’s Departure Left the Door Open for Dirk’s Return
Bush Hamdan was penciled in as Boise State’s offensive coordinator, but they should have used a pen, as Hamdam left BSU for the same position with Kentucky. Once again Boise State was in a position to find and offensive coordinator on the fly. Luckily, Koetter didn’t go far and his desire to fade into the background was overtaken by his love for the program.
Veteran Presence
Now, with Koetter’s return, Coach Danielson gains a respected offensive mind with vast head coaching experience. This move comes as Boise State gears up for a run at the newly expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. Koetter’s coaching journey—from high school ranks in Idaho to the NFL—has come full circle, and he’s ready to contribute once more to the program that gave him his initial shot as a head coach over a quarter-century ago.
As Koetter steps back into the Broncos’ fold, he’ll work with a group of quarterbacks, including the intriguing Malachi Nelson. Nelson, a five-star prospect and the No. 5 overall quarterback in the Class of 2023, transferred to Boise State after a brief stint at USC. Keep an eye on this talented young quarterback as Koetter plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the position at Boise State .
