A couple of upsets in Week 12 changed the picture for the College Football Playoff. Arizona State’s 24-14 win over No. 16 Kansas State put the Sun Devils in contention to make the CFP, while the Wildcats’ loss ended their hopes of competing for a championship.
No. 18 Washington State traveled to play New Mexico at University Stadium on Saturday night with an outside opportunity to fight their way into the CFP. Per ESPN BET, the Cougars were 11.5-point favorites to beat the Lobos.
A college football upset happened on Saturday night
New Mexico came out the gate strong, taking a 7-0 lead on their first drive of the game. However, Washington State would take a 28-14 advantage into halftime. Whatever head coach Bronco Mendenhall told his team at the break worked, as the Lobos would outscore WSU 24-7 in the second half en route to a 38-35 upset of the Cougars.
New Mexico ruined Washington State’s playoff hopes
Washington State outgained New Mexico State 547-534 in total yards. The Lobos dominated on the ground, rushing for 360 yards and four touchdowns. New Mexico is now 5-6 and will travel to play Hawaii on Nov. 30 with an opportunity to make a bowl game if they defeat the Rainbow Warriors.
Washington State’s dreams of making the CFP are over after falling to 8-2. The Cougars will travel to play Oregon State in Week 13 before ending their regular season against Wyoming.
