Dillon Johnson just couldn’t catch a break when it comes to injuries, and it’s certainly heartbreaking to hear the Washington Huskies running back detail the pain he’s going through after the College Football Playoff National Championship.
It’s a double-whammy for Johnson as well, with the Huskies falling to the Michigan Wolverines in the title showdown.
Johnson, who had to battle an injury just to make it to the game in Houston, went down in the very first play of Monday’s contest with an ankle injury. He had to go to the blue medical tent on the sideline as a result, and while he’s able to go back, it’s clear he’s not at his best.
The Huskies’ star RB still finished the title showdown with a team-high 11 carries for 33 yards, but he failed to have the same impact he had during the Sugar Bowl when he had two rushing touchdowns to lead Washington to victory over the Texas Longhorns.
In his postgame presser that followed their 34-13 defeat, Johnson got brutally honest on his injury and what he’s truly feeling physically.
“It just sucks, bro. The only good thing working was my left ankle, and the first play of the game, I got a high ankle sprain and it’s not really much I could really do,” Johnson revealed, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.
It’s hard not to feel bad for Dillon Johnson, especially in a game where he saw a couple of other running backs dominate on the other end. The Michigan Wolverines made easy work of the Washington Huskies, thanks in large part to Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum who had two touchdowns each and combined for 238 rushing yards.
It’s certainly a big “What If” had Johnson been healthier. Unfortunately, we’ll never be able to know the answer to that.
Kalen DeBoer Proud of Dillon Johnson, Washington Huskies Despite Defeat
While it’s a sad and frustrating day for Dillon Johnson and the Washington Huskies, head coach Kalen DeBoer made sure to uplift the spirits of his players postgame.
DeBoer emphasized that the team has nothing to be ashamed of and should only be proud of what they accomplished this 2023 season. He highlighted how proud he is of what they accomplished, adding that they brought back football to Washington.
“They’ve restored UW football, and they’ve made a city proud, they’ve made a fan base proud … most of all they’ve showed what they’re made of,” DeBoer shared, via ESPN.
Hopefully, the Huskies can bounce back stronger from their latest setback.
