The Washington Commanders have had a 2023 season to forget. Thankfully, for them and their fans, there is just one more game remaining. However, this game against the Dallas Cowboys does have some implications for both sides. Because of that, the starting quarterback for this game is still important.
Washington Commanders Name Week 18 Starting Quarterback
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera named Sam Howell the Week 18 starting quarterback. Assuming nothing crazy happens between now and then, this means that Howell will have started all 17 games for the Washington Commanders this season. Unfortunately, it does not seem like Howell has secured the starting job for 2024 by any means.
Implications for Both Teams
In Week 16, the Commanders benched Howell in favor of QB Jacoby Brissett. Due to Brissett’s good performance in Week 16, he was planned to be the starting quarterback in Week 17. However, he suffered an injury in the middle of the week that resulted in Howell getting the starting job back.
On top of this, Washington has a mere 4-12 record this season. It has resulted in them currently holding the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Considering how talented this quarterback class is supposed to be, it has raised questions as to whether the Commanders will move off of Howell after this season.
Then, we have the Dallas Cowboys. Due to a controversial win over the Detroit Lions and an unbelievable loss by the Philadelphia Eagles last week, the Cowboys are now in the driver’s seat to lock up the #2 seed in the NFC. All they have to do is win this game over the Commanders.
