The Washington Commanders signed quarterback Marcus Mariota to a one-year deal with a base value of $6 million and it could go up to as much as $10 million, per a source that told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. With Mariota signing a one-year deal with the franchise, Washington will now have a ton of options with what to do with the second selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Marcus Mariota was the backup quarterback to quarterback Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles last season. Washington still has quarterback Sam Howell on the roster for now. What are some of the options that general manager Adam Peters can do with the number two pick in the 2024 NFL Draft?
Even With the Washington Commanders Signing Quarterback Marcus Mariota To the Roster, They Will Still Take a Quarterback With the Second Overall Pick in the 2024 NFL Draft
Even with Mariota being signed to the roster, it would be silly for the Commanders to pass up on a quarterback with the second pick. Caleb Williams from USC will most likely be the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.
After that, Drake Maye from North Carolina, J.J. McCarthy from Michigan, or Jayden Daniels from LSU will most likely be the pick for the Washington Commanders. Washington needs a quarterback for the next decade and the last time they took a quarterback with the second overall pick, it was Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Baylor.
Draft the Best Wide Receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft
The best wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft class is Marvin Harrison Jr. from the Ohio State Buckeyes. He is the best wide receiver prospect potentially since Calvin Johnson Jr., when he was drafted second overall in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He played college football with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
A season ago, Harrison Jr. caught 67 passes for 1,211 yards receiving and 14 touchdowns. Marvin Harrison Jr. averaged 18.1 yards per reception. He also had 26 yards rushing on two carries and one touchdown and averaged 13 yards per carry. The Washington Commanders receiving core of Marvin Harrison Jr., Terry McLaurin, and Jahan Dotson would be a total nightmare to guard.
Trade Back
General manager Adam Peters could trade back in the 2024 NFL Draft. They can move back one spot with the New England Patriots and still get their quarterback or make a move with someone else depending on what they want to do.
The Washington Commanders need to get their first-round pick right. They will also have two second-round picks, but if Washington were to trade back, they can get more picks. The Commanders need to retool the roster a little bit and find good player value in the later rounds as well. Washington is looking to get back to its winning ways also.
