The Philadelphia Eagles could not retain their backup quarterback from the 2023 season. The Washington Commanders made a major move on Tuesday morning that could shed light on their plans for the 2024 NFL Draft.
Adam Peters is open to keeping Sam Howell at No. 1 QB
At the NFL Combine, Commanders general manager Adam Peters said he wouldn’t commit to taking a quarterback with the No. 2 pick. Peters said he feels good about quarterback Sam Howell being a starter for the Commanders.
Now Washington has a backup.
The Philadelphia Eagles lost Marcus Mariota
Per Adam Schefter with ESPN, the Commanders are set to sign Marcus Mariota on a one-year deal worth up to $10 million. Mariota served as the Eagles backup for Jalen Hurts last season.
Washington now has Marcus Mariota and Sam Howell on its roster, with another quarterback potentially joining, as the team holds the No. 2 overall pick in April’s draft. https://t.co/1qmKgVCBr6

The Commanders have options for the No. 2 pick
The Commanders have a solid quarterback room if the team chooses not to draft a rookie in the first round of April’s draft. And if they do select a quarterback at No. 2, they’ll have a crowded room in training camp.
There was chatter at the NFL Combine that the Commanders could trade down from the No. 2 spot to increase their draft capital as they rebuild the team after losing key players at the trade deadline last season. That option is still in play after the Commanders plans to add Mariota.
Mariota has thrown for 15,820 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions in his nine-year NFL career.
