There were questions on what the Washington Commanders were planning to do with the head coaching position. The team didn’t do anything to the point that people openly wondered if they were targeting a specific head coach who just left New England.
However, it’s now clear to everyone that Dan Quinn will be leading the sidelines for the Commanders in 2024. Some fans may be disappointed with the coaching hire, but they will feel frustrated when they are reminded who the team was targeting in the offseason.
Washington Commanders targeted Ben Johnson and Mike Macdonald for the HC position
In a division where they are flanked by the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, any sort of help would have been great for the Commanders. They were targeting two talented coaches to lead them from the sidelines, but they both decided to move in different directions.
The Spun’s Chris Rosvoglou wrote about the process that went into their attempt to hire Ben Johnson and Mike Macdonald:
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Commanders were targeting former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald for their head coaching job. However, the Seahawks were able to strike a deal with him on Wednesday.
Prior to the Macdonald rumors, the Commanders were being heavily linked to Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Some people thought it was a certainty that he’d take his talents to the nation’s capital.
With this revelation, it’s clear that they were missing out on their primary targets for head coach in the offseason and had to move fast.
Is Dan Quinn the right hire for the Washington Commanders?
The Washington Commanders badly need help across all facets of the game, and that’s something Quinn can provide. He’s helped the Atlanta Falcons reach the Super Bowl, and the Dallas Cowboys have one of the toughest defenses in the NFL this season.
However, Quinn’s team somehow manages to lose in the biggest moments. He will forever be remembered as the coach who blew a 28-3 lead to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. He’s also the architect behind he disappointing collapses of the Cowboys in recent years.
It remains to be seen if Quinn is actually the right man for the job or just a “bridge” head coach for when the Washington Commanders decide to pursue Ben Johnson again in 2025.
