The Washington Commanders have been particularly busy on the first day of the 2024 NFL free agency period as they continue to retool their roster around their new head coach, Dan Quinn.
But while they’ve already signed three key free agents as of this writing, they’re in danger of losing one of their own, as their defensive back, Kamren Curl, posted two tweets that seemingly alluded to the status of his future in the nation’s capital.
In back-to-back tweets last week, Curl posted the “peace out” and the “laughing” emojis. Per Spotrac, the Arkansas product was projected to get a four-year deal worth $57.7 million, which would’ve made him the fifth highest-paid strong safety in the NFL, and perhaps the Washington Commanders don’t want to pay him that much, despite their huge cap space.
It can also be noted that the Washington Commanders could’ve used the franchise tag on Kamren Curl last month, but they didn’t. If they did so, Curl would be making $17.1 million in 2024, which is a bigger payday than his average annual salary of $14.4 million.
Kamren Curl has been a bright spot for the Washington Commanders
Kamren Curl has been one of the rare success stories for the Washington Commanders because he has been highly productive since getting drafted in the seventh round during the 2020 NFL Draft.
He has started 53 of the 60 NFL games he played in Washington over the last four years. The PFF listed him as one of the top free agent safeties this season because he has averaged 30 “stops” in the past four seasons. A stop is any tackle that constitutes a failed offensive play.
In 2023, the 25-year-old safety recorded a career-high 115 combined tackles (74 solo), one sack, and one forced fumble.
Kamren Curl’s free agency options if he leaves the Washington Commanders
The Green Bay Packers were listed as one of the top free agency destinations for Kamren Curl, but they’ve just acquired Xavier McKinney from the New York Giants.
With Green Bay out of the picture, the other teams that come to mind where Curl can help are the Cincinnati Bengals and the Indianapolis Colts.
