The Washington Commanders have the next most precious pick at the 2024 NFL Draft. After the Chicago Bears select the top overall pick, it will be the Commanders’ turn to get theirs in the first round with the No. 2 selection overall. Brent Solak of The Ringer indicated that he has strong feelings about the potential of the Commanders trying to secure the Bears’ pick by trading up for the simple reason that Washington wants to get Caleb Williams.
Could the no. 1 pick be on the move again?
I can’t shake the feeling that Washington (who currently owns the second pick) is going to explore trades with Chicago (who currently owns the first pick). The reasons are obvious: Washington would really like to draft Caleb Williams, the D.C.-born quarterback who played under current Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury last season at USC.
The Bears also look as though they are determined to take Williams. Chicago still has Justin Fields, but he could be traded sooner or later. Either way, odds say that Williams will be picked first overall by the Bears, leaving the Commanders with still great options at the QB position, with Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels available.
What Caleb Williams Said About The Possibility Of Landing With The Washington Commanders
Williams shared his thoughts on the possibility that the Washington Commanders would take him. It could be some sort of a full-circle scenario for the USC Trojans product since he was born and raised in DC.
“It’d be really cool because it’s so familiar,” Williams said just before the NFL Combine (via ESPN). “There’s a time and place for everything. My job and my hobby is being at the facility or on the field or watching film. Or relaxing and prepping for the next day or game.”
“My main goal and focus … is to go win games and stay focused on keeping the main goal the main goal,” Williams added.
In the 2023 NFL season, the Commanders mostly utilized Sam Howell as the starting quarterback, but he did not look so promising under center, even getting benched late in the season for Jacoby Brissett.
