Washington Commanders Named Best Fit for USC Quarterback Caleb Williams in 2024 NFL Draft

The Washington Commanders have the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after finishing the 2023 season with a 4-13 record. Picking so high in the draft gives the Commanders great flexibility, especially when it comes to addressing their greatest need: quarterback.

For a while, it seemed as if Sam Howell had a promising future with the team despite being a fifth round draft pick in 2022. However, the 2023 season saw him lead the NFL in interceptions with 21 picks while throwing just 21 touchdown passes. He was also sacked more than any other quarterback in NFL (65).

The quarterback class in the 2024 NFL Draft is headlined by some big names at the top, such as Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix, and JJ McCarthy. With Williams expected to go first overall to the Chicago Bears, the Commanders could take Maye or Daniels, or trade back and pick any of the remainders in the middle of the first round.

However, a recent article on Bleacher Report states that Washington is actually the best fit for Williams.

Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report explains that Williams would be the perfect fit for the Commanders, and they for him, for a plethora of reasons:

“While the connection will continue to stem from newly minted Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and Williams’ time together at USC last year, bringing the Bowie, Maryland, native home could be priority No. 1 for a revamped Washington organization.

“A highly recruited prospect out of Gonzaga College High School located just a few short miles away from the White House, Williams has childhood ties and football ties to the area that make this such a popular talking point.

“On the football side of things, he could be everything Washington has desired under center since it took another Heisman Trophy winner in Robert Griffin III in 2012.

“On offense, a trio of weapons remain that would present both Kingsbury and Williams a variety of ways to attack defenses in wideouts Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and running back Brian Robinson Jr.”

The local ties certainly make Williams an intriguing name for the Commanders. However, with the second overall pick, and the Heisman Trophy winner projected to go first, they would need to give up a great deal in order to move up one spot to get him.

As Fowler notes, though, if it were to mean getting their next franchise quarterback (finally) and a generational talent in Williams, then there may not be such a thing as a price that is too high.

How Can the Washington Commanders Move Up to the Number One Overall Pick?

In addition to the second overall pick, the Commanders have five more picks in the top 105. One would have to assume that the Bears, who also have interest in Williams, will require at least the second overall pick, two more picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, and a future first round pick in order to give up their top spot.

And even that might be too low for them. All rumors indicate that Chicago’s asking price is extremely high. The question is whether or not the Commanders, or any quarterback-needy team, will be willing to meet it.
