The Minnesota Vikings are going to be an extremely interesting team to watch during the upcoming 2024 NFL offseason. While they are still fighting for their playoff hopes, there is no question that the front office is already looking towards the future when it comes to a new franchise quarterback.
Kirk Cousins went down with a season-ending torn Achilles earlier this season. That has put his future in question and Minnesota had already been rumored to be interested in moving on at the end of this season. Going after a young franchise quarterback makes much more sense at this point in time for the Vikings.
Thankfully, the 2024 NFL Draft is loaded with quarterback talent. If the Vikings want one, they should be able to find one.
Vikings Urged To Make Major Trade Up For New Franchise Quarterback
At this point in the season, the Vikings appear to be headed for a middle-of-the-pack first-round pick. That would not be high enough to get one of the elite quarterback prospects. However, they could look into trading up to get one.
Pro Football Focus is urging the Vikings to make an aggressive move up in the NFL Draft to target one specific quarterback. He thinks LSU star and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels would be the right pick for Minnesota.
“If we’re being honest, even hoping for Daniels to be available at No. 21 in the draft feels unrealistic at this point. However, the pick stands because Daniels should be an explored option for the Vikings, no matter where they need to get to draft him.”
Daniels is coming off of an insane season for the LSU Tigers. He was the clear-cut favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and the voters got it right.
During the 2023 season for LSU, Daniels ended up completing 72.2 percent of his pass attempts for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns, and four interceptions. He also put up running back numbers on the ground, rushing for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns on 135 carries. Those numbers average out to an impressive 8.4 yards per carry.
Standing in at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Daniels has great size for an NFL quarterback. The Vikings would be able to immediately put him out on the field and his playmaking ability would cause opposing defenses nightmares as they try to defend against Justin Jefferson through the air.
Expect to see the Vikings look at a lot of different options in the 2024 NFL offseason. Bringing Cousins back could be an option, but going out and getting a talent like Daniels would make much more sense.
